Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep. These pauses can lower oxygen levels, disrupt rest, and strain the cardiovascular system. There are three main types:
1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
The most common form, OSA occurs when throat muscles relax and block the airway. This leads to snoring, gasping, and repeated breathing interruptions throughout the night.
2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
Less common than OSA, CSA happens when the brain does not send consistent signals to the muscles that control breathing. This results in slower, irregular, or paused breathing without airway blockage.
3. Complex or Mixed Sleep Apnea
A combination of OSA and CSA. Individuals with this type experience both physical airway obstruction and disrupted brain signaling.
If you notice loud snoring, pauses in breathing, or excessive daytime sleepiness, it's important to consult a healthcare professional for evaluation
