Thyroid cancer is among Taiwan's top 10 cancers and is the 4th most common cancer in women, frequently affecting younger individuals.

The challenge of early detection

Over half of women over 50 have thyroid nodules, most of which are benign. However, atypical nodules require further investigation. Many cases, like the young teacher's, are discovered incidentally during health check-ups. Her nodule, initially dismissed by her, was confirmed cancerous using an AI-powered system, leading to successful early treatment.

AI improving diagnosis

Traditional ultrasound relies on subjective interpretation. NTUH's new AI system objectifies nodule analysis, providing doctors with more precise data. This allows for safer monitoring of low-risk nodules, potentially avoiding immediate invasive procedures.

Key risk factors include childhood radiation exposure, a family history of thyroid cancer, and prior head/neck radiation therapy. Regular check-ups are crucial for these individuals.
